Veterinary Pet Insurance Teams with NY Jets’ Eric Decker to Fund the Rescue, Training and Uniting of Shelter Dogs with Veterans with Disabilities

Brea, Calif. (April 22, 2014) – For all the trips to the veterinarian and treats given out, Pet Parent’s Day on Sunday, April 28, celebrates those who lovingly consider their pets part of the family. Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), the nation’s first and largest provider of pet health insurance, commemorates the seventh annual Pet Parent’s Day® on April 27 by helping Deckers Dogs unite shelter dogs with our military veterans returning home with disabilities.

Through Memorial Day (May 26), VPI will donate $5 (up to $10,000) to Deckers Dogs for every unique pet insurance quote generated at New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker and his wife, singer Jessie James Decker established Deckers Dogs in September 2013 to provide support to Freedom Service Dogs’ Operation Freedom. Operation Freedom was developed to help returning war veterans and military personnel transition from active duty and combat to civilian life. Active duty service members and veterans with disabilities are placed with highly specialized service dogs that help them find a new level of independence in their post-combat life.

"We created Pet Parent’s Day seven years ago to recognize the human-animal bond and the love and commitment that pet owners give to their furry family members," said Curtis Steinhoff, director of corporate communications for VPI. "This Pet Parent’s Day we’re proud to partner with Deckers Dogs to build new bonds between these rescued service dogs and our wounded warriors."

For a typical service dog, the journey from shelter to service costs approximately $25,000. With the help of the public’s support, Deckers Dogs has already funded the rescue, care and custom training for three service dogs for military veterans in just six months.
